Book Night

On 21st of April there will be „Book Night“ in our school. There will be a lot of different activities for all interested children, parents and teachers. They will be on several locations in our school. We are hoping to stimulate students to everyday reading with our program. A lot of research has shown that children who listen to stories from early age, learn faster. They are also better in communication and they are developing reading skills and that is directly connected  with success in school and life.  Literary meeting for students of lower classes will be with Branimir Dolenc, painter and writer of seven legends about Koprivnica, Krapina and Zagreb. Literary meeting for students of higher classes will be with award-winning author and translator of haiku poetry Đurđa Vukelić-Rožić and Stjepan Rožić, who is also author of haiku poetry.

The 20th anniversary of returning the beavers to Žutica forest

On 20th of April is 20th anniversary of  returning the beavers to Žutica forest. The return of the beavers is important because they used to be an integral part of the fauna in Croatia, and their disappearance impoverished the overall biodiversity of the country. Our school, JU Zeleni prsten and Udruga Zlatno doba, on the basis of cooperation agreements, will mark this important event by an exhibition about the beaver. The exhibition will be placed in Eco corner (Eko kutić) which, beacuse of its mobility and purpose, is suitable for these eco-educational activities. We have collected materials for the exhibition for years and we have kept them in our school library. Students will contribute in the exhibition with drawings of beavers in their natural habitat. With the exhibition we will mark this important day and decorate our school. With the return of the beaver to its natural habitat Croatia became the leading country in this part of Europe joining the European project of returning the beavers.

HEROES

What is a hero? Looking at this word it looks exactly the same and as plain as all the other words. What makes it so special then? How can this small word inspire so many people? It's because of it's meaning. The word ''hero'' is used to describe people who have done something amazing and worth remembering in their lives. Most of the time it's because of their work, but sometimes it's simply because of their existance.

Hellen Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, in 1880. At a young age she became deaf, blind and mute. But her disabilities never stopped her. She learnt to read, speak and write. She also went to college and graduated with honours. She became a writer, activist and eucator. She was known worldwide. Her existance inspired people, especially those with disabilities, which makes her a true hero.

Sometimes heroes don't have to show us the right way. We can learn by their mistakes. Kurt Cobain was an American singer and songwriter. He was born in 1976. He was best known as a member of a rock band ''Nirvana'' which he established with his friend Krist Novoselic. Cobain struggled with heroine addiction. He wrote an autobiography in which he talked about his life and his addiction struggles. He died at the age of 27, in 1994. His body was found at his home in Seattle.

'' I'm an instant star, just add water and stir.'' This is a quote from one of my favorite singers, David Bowie. He was born in England, in 1947. He was a musician that inspired millions of people all around the world. He also wrote one of my favorite songs, '' Thursday child''. He died from liver cancer, in 2016. In my opinion he was one of the greatest musicians of all times.

Michael Jordan or ''Air Jordan'' is one of the greatest athletes of all times. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1963. He is a basketball player, Olympic athlete, buissnessperson and an actor. He is a very competitive person, which turned out to be very useful. He has received many sports awards and been to many important competitions. He is a hero because he lives his dream and does what he loves. We should all do what makes us happy because life is too short to waste.

We all have those days when we don't know what we're doing in our lives. Heroes are people who inspire us to push our limits, help us see the bright side and find our way in the darkness. But we don't have to look so far to find our heroes, they are usually very close. Our family and friends are also our personal heroes. People who teach us to love and to be loved. They are all heroes in their own way. But there is also a small hero in every one of us. A little person that lives within us and is afraid to come out. It's called self-confidence. We see other people and consider them our heroes, but what we don't see is ourselves. We should be our biggest heroes because we are the ones who will be there when no one else is.
